Not in a million years would I have thought that the home economics class I was forced to take in high school would ever do me any
good. Well actually it was the time I spent during the summers at my grandma's house, at the Thiens' watching Sherleen bake
cakes. I really just went over there because she gave me the left over pieces of her cakes and all the frosting I could eat. I never
realized I could and did learn something. My wife thought I was crazy when I told her I would make Eddie's 1st birthday cake, and
when I told her I was going to make a flamed hot rod, she really thought I was insane. Thus began my career as a cake maker.
Off to the Grocery store. Angie could not believe what I had started, two 9 x 13 cakes, one 8 x 8 cake, one small coffee can cake
and one soup can cake. I told her this would be the easy part making it look like a hot rod. The frosting and flames would be the
hard part for me.
It took me a couple hours to frost it and do the flames. I kept putting it in the freezer to get the frosting hard so I could work with it.
And then I had to add the flying eyeball, of coarse. What really impressed me are the flames Angie did on the # 1 on Eddie's sign,
her first ever flames. I did all of this after Eddie was in bed so he didn't see it until the party.
I think he likes it.
At the least he
had fun making a
mess. Then
Jenna said I had
to make her a
cake too, and the
rest is history.
All of my friend laugh when I say I have even done custom Birthday cakes. They talk about how hard the real flame jobs I have done
are and I just tell them "Try doing a 4 color flame job with frosting." I would prefer to paint a car over a cake any day, but the rewards
from the cakes are the most enjoyable. I wasn't sure how I would top Eddie's 1st Birthday, but here it goes.
Jenna said she wanted flames on her cake after seeing Eddie's
so I got out the cake pans and went to town. This one was a
little easier. She's all about pink, purple and princesses. I think
she was more excited than I would have ever imagined. I don't
know how many girls would want flames for their 5th birthday, I
guess that show whose daughter she is.

This year Eddie was in to tractors, Bob the Builder, so I decided to build a bulldozer and you can't forget the flames. I had a little
help this year. He did real good until we were about done and he discovered that you could eat this stuff, then I had to give him the
bowl to keep his fingers out of the cake. Okay, blow out the candles and LETS EAT!

My niece Nina said I should make her a cake and I asked her what kind of cake would a 14 year old want. She said a cake with
flames. She wanted a pair of black Converse All Star high tops with pink flames for her birthday, I couldn't find any flamed ones so
she got all black instead. So I decided to make her a flames high top cake, but that black frosting is very messy, memories from
Eddie's first cake kept coming to mind so I made it bright green. It kinda looks like a shoe? She thought it was funny and that was
the point. One of my other nieces, Karlie, also wanted a flamed cake. I thought to my self, she loves her cell phone, so I made a big
one.

Well it is time for cake # 3 for Eddie. This year I decided to do a tractor cake, with flames. I don't think I am getting any better at this
but it is kinda fun. Eddie seems to enjoy it so I guess thats what matters. I came up with the idea and thought to myself, I could use
those french doughnuts, I call them tractor tire doughnuts, for the wheels to save me the hassle of making 8 round cakes for the
wheels. Sure enough, we looked everywhere in Pella, Iowa City and most places along the interstate in between. I think they
stopped making them. So I ended up with glazed doughnuts from HyVee, not as cool but I had no other options. It started out
looking like a submarine, but I had a plan. This turned out to be a very big cake. 3 boxes of cake mix, a dozen eggs, and 8 cans of
frosting. I didn't use quite all of that, we will be eating crackers and cookies with frosting for a long time. This time I made all the
colors for the flames instead of buying the tubes. I thought that might be easier too. I used 2 1/2 packages of food coloring. This
"hobbie" is getting almost as expensive as my '38.
