:: Eddie's '61 Ford Unibody Pickup Bed ::
:: Scott's Rod Garage ::
Summer 2008, Eddie is now about two and a half years old, and we decided it was time for a "Big Boy" bed. Well, you know me, I got
a little crazy. Jenna was sleeping in the Hot Wheels bed I originally made for my nephew, and Eddie couldn't have just a plain old
bed. I decided to build him a truck bed designed like my '61 Ford Unibody. In June we went to Menards and bought some supplies.
I drew my design up on one side and made patterns for the other side. I cut both pieces out and had some help putting them
together. I still had the hood / toy box part to build yet. I thought the 4th of July weekend would be a good chance to get this finished.

Well unfortunately the story does not end there. Lots of friends stopped by over the week end to see what I was doing. Angie said
everyone was stopping her up town before the parade and asking " What is Scott building and is it going to be done in time for the
parade?" She replied "It's Eddie's bed" and they were all confused. The forecast was for sunny skies ALL weekend, my friends all
told me I picked a good weekend to do this. Here is the FUNNY part... about 4 am Sunday Angie rolled over and said that sounds
like thunder. I sat straight up in bed, hoping she was dreaming. I was blinded by lightning. I ran to the door and looked out, no rain
yet. I ran back and told Angie to get up because we had to get the bed taken apart and brought inside be fore the rain, being made
of MDF and having fresh latex paint on it , that would not be good. I ran to the kitchen counter grabbed my drill and out the door I
went. And then it DOWN POURED. I started taking it apart piece by piece and bringing them in the house so Angie could dry them
off. By the time I was down to the last two pieces I was standing in 2 -3 inches of water. It didn't take me 5 minuets to disassemble
the bed, but it took us 45 to get it dried off good enough that I could relax. Luckily the bed was safe without damage. I on the other
hand about had a heart attack.

I started at about 7:30 on Friday the 4th and finished up the toy box. I then sprayed it with dark sealer to give the color better coverage
and to help with some detail tricks in the paint. Eddie was a big help, when I was laying out the bodylines with fine line tape he was
following my finger with his to make sure the tape was stuck down good, and then he would give his "Thumbs Up" approval.
After taping off the windows so they would stay the grey sealer color, I painted the silver for the wheels and window trim, and then the
black for the tires. I sprayed on one coat of my own custom color mix and then pulled off all the fine line tape. 4 rolls worth. I then
sprayed two more coats on my purple. You can see the FORD on the tailgate and all the body lines only from certain angles, they
have a "Ghost" effect thanks to the sealer and tape.

It was late afternoon, and about 4 more rolls of tape, before I was ready to spray the flame colors. I faded 6 colors together in the
flames. Angie took the kids to the parade and then to grandma's before I started shooting any colors, so Eddie hadn't seen it until I
unmasked it all about 9:30 pm that night. I cleaned up my stuff just in time for the fireworks. On Saturday morning I started about 8. I
still had all the front end and back end details to paint, and I also outlined all the flames in green, outlined the door, hood, tailgate
gapes in black, added a red line stripe to the wheels (a little Hot Wheels inspiration), and then I could finally clear coat it all. By 2 pm
I was finished with the last coat of clear.

If you look at the pictures real close you will see all kinds of little details that you don't notice at first, like the FORD lettering on the
tailgate. It looks awesome out side in the sun. After it had baked in the sun for 3 -4 hours I assembled it, and went in and woke
Eddie up from his nap to check it out. Later that evening Jenna and I painted the inside with light grey latex paint. Now I could let it
set out side overnight again so the paint smell would all go away. And we could move Eddie in to his new bed in the morning.

We are going with a Garage theme for Eddie's room, we still have to paint the walls but I have managed to get some other stuff
done for his room. I made a custom Hot Wheels truck to match his bed. I did the Mustang drawing long before I ever was old
enough to drive and I thought it would make for some COOL artwork to decorate the walls. I redrew it on a piece of plywood and
gave it to my best friend Cory Spencer to finish. He did an awesome job on the pictures, he also did a couple for Jenna too. I
bought this old Snap On tool box CHEAP it was a repo deal, and thought it would make a SWEET dresser. Now maybe you will
understand why MY 38 is not getting done.
